This add-on honours degree focuses on managerial and developmental aspects which will equip you for a management role in the tourism, sport, recreation and leisure industry. You will develop transferable skills and competencies necessary for executive positions in the industry. Success at management level can often depend on an ability to identify problems and to diagnose appropriate solutions. This programme will give you the knowledge and skills to apply a critical, systematic and mature approach to problem solving within the tourism and sport industry. You will also develop the capacity to discriminate between alternative management strategies and to successfully manage change.

Excellent social skills are particularly important in this industry and on this programme your personal development will be enhanced, so that you will manifest a high degree of self-confidence, sensitivity, responsibility, initiative and enterprise. Your ability to conceptualise, to draw independent conclusions based on a rigorous, analytical and critical approach to data, and to communicate effectively at different levels will be developed.

You will be taught about the structure and organisation of the tourism and sport industry, on both a national and an international scale. You will also gain expertise in information technology, with particular reference to applications related to the tourism and sport industry.

Minimum Entry Requirements

Holders of the Bachelor of Business in Sport Management or an equivalent Level 7 qualification are eligible to join this programme.

Semester 1

Strategic Management, Marketing Management, Financial Management, Hotel Operational Training Simulation.

Semester 2

Tourism and Regional Development, Business Research

plus one module from

Event Management, Management of Sport and Physical Activity Programmes.

 

Progression

An honours (Level 8) degree is an effective basis for postgraduate training and research leading to Master’s and PhD (Level 9/10) qualifications. Staff in the department or in the Careers Office can advise on the range of opportunities available at AIT, in Ireland and abroad for such postgraduate programmes.

Taught postgraduate opportunities for the graduates of this programme are numerous and varied and include Master’s in health and leisure studies/recreation and leisure/sport management/tourism management in other third-level institutions. Graduates with a minimum grade of 2.2 are also eligible to apply for the one-year, full-time Master of Business programme at AIT.

Professional Recognition

As a graduate of this programme, you are deemed eligible by the Teaching Council to apply for a Postgraduate Diploma in Education programme at Irish universities to be recognised to teach the subjects: Accounting and Business.

Career Opportunities

Employment opportunities are varied for graduates of this honours degree. They include work with county councils and community games organisations as sport development officers; with the HSE as physical activity coordinators; with national sports governing bodies as coaches and administration officers; with local sports partnerships as sports coordinators; with third level educational institutions as sports officers; and with leisure facilities, health farms and holiday camps in managerial positions.
