The software industry – domestically and internationally – is growing at a phenomenal rate and there has been a corresponding increase in the demand for highly qualified graduates with the requisite knowledge and skills in software engineering. In particular, this has created excellent prospects for those holding honours degree qualifications.
The market for software includes multimedia training products, telemarketing and related applications software. The software industry is knowledge and skills dependent. It has a high net export value and is ideally suited to wealth generation.
This one-year add-on honours degree will give you a solid grounding in software engineering as an academic discipline and secondly, as a profession within the industrial sector. The programme is designed to ensure that you will have expertise in all aspects of software engineering. The fact that the course is run over one year is a real strength in terms of pursuing employment opportunities.
Minimum Entry Requirements
Bachelor of Engineering in Electronics and Communication Systems or Bachelor of Engineering in Computer Engineering or Bachelor of Engineering in Manufacturing Processes or equivalent (all Level 7 programmes).
Modules
Semester 1
Software Design, Databases, Networks, Server Side Technologies, Software Management and Practice, Project.
Semester 2
Software Design, The Engineer in Society, Distributed Systems, Client-Side Technologies, Software Management and Practice, Project.
Laboratory Work
The laboratory-based elements of the course supplement the theoretical aspects and are used to demonstrate the application of engineering principles to the design, implementation and testing of software and hardware systems. The practical work will facilitate you in becoming proficient in the use of software engineering techniques to support design and quality assurance.
Progression
As a graduate from this course you are eligible to apply to join the Master of Science in Software Engineering (Level 9) at AIT. Alternatively, you may wish to pursue postgraduate studies at another institution.
Professional Recognition
Graduates of this programme are deemed eligible by the Teaching Council to apply for a Postgraduate Diploma in Education programme at Irish universities, recognised to teach the subject Computer Studies.
Career Opportunities
The route to this honours degree has been an intensive one and as such employment prospects are excellent. As a graduate of this course you can expect to find employment as software engineering designers, computer hardware designers, computer network managers, etc.
