This two-year course allows you to develop business and equine-related knowledge and skills in preparation for employment within a wide range of occupations. The equine sector is one of Ireland’s most successful industries within an international business arena, there are excellent job opportunities worldwide, enabling graduates to travel and enjoy challenging careers. The course is offered in association with Gurteen College, Ballingarry, Roscrea, Co Tipperary.

Studying on this higher certificate will provide you with knowledge of those disciplines which form the basis for a successful career in the business and equine sectors. You will be expected to understand the factors which make an equine or a general business organisation successful. You will develop the knowledge and learn the skills required for a career in the wider business sectors. The qualification also provides the necessary foundation for progression to an appropriate Bachelor degree (Level 7), as indicated below. Emphasis is placed on both the theoretical and practical elements of the curriculum throughout the course.

During both years, the linking of the business and equine elements involves attendance at AIT and Gurteen College.


Minimum Entry Requirements

Leaving Certificate

Grade D3 at ordinary level in five subjects in the Leaving Certificate examination. Two of these subjects must be Mathematics and a language (English or Irish).

FETAC

Any FETAC level 5 qualification is acceptable. There are no specific module requirements.


Modules

Year 1 – Semester 1

Equine Business Administration, Learning to Learn, Equine Anatomy and Physiology, Equine Facilities Management, Principles of Equitation, Horsemastership.

Year 1 – Semester 2

Computer Applications, Economics, Equine Reproduction, Principals of Equine Health and Disease, Horsemastership, Principals of Equitation, Work Placement.

A supervised work experience placement of 12 weeks’ duration must be completed in an approved setting.

Year 2 – Semester 1

Marketing, Financial Accounting, Equitation and Equine Behaviour, Equine Nutrition, Applied Science.

Year 2 – Semester 2

Human Resource Management, Management Accounting, Applied Science, Equitation and Equine Behaviour, The Irish Equine Industry

Progression

As a holder of this qualification you are eligible to apply to join the Bachelor of Business in Equine Studies (Level 7) one-year, add-on programme at AIT.
