Assistive Technology

Athlone Institute of Technology provides a comprehensive Assistive Technology Service that is central to the facilitation of people with disabilities. This service is delivered:

 

throughout the institute with facilities such as:

  • AT enabled computers in various locations, such as the Assistive Technology room, library and computer rooms.
  • Adaptive software such as Text Enlargement, Mind-mapping, Voice Recognition, Read/Write Scanning, Screen Reading & Word Predictive Software installed, as well as college-wide availability of ‘Texthelp Read & Write Gold software’.
  • Portable devices such as Laptops, Adaptive Keyboards, Alternative Mouse Controls and Radio Aids.
  • Induction Loops available at information desk and in library.

 

through the Assistive Technology Support providing:

  • Help in selecting appropriate technology to maximise productivity and independence.
  • Training in computers & assistive technology to students registered with the service.
  • Technical Support - software installation on laptops /PC's supplied and repairs/maintenance of equipment.
  • Response to general Assistive Technology queries from students, lecturers, college staff, prospective AIT employees, prospective employers of AIT graduates.

 

through the Assistive Technology Centre (ATC) offering: 

  • Ground floor location.
  • Ten workstations with scanners attached.
  • Deskjet and laser jet printers and photocopier.
  • All computers are housed on adjustable electronic tables.
  • Students supplied with laptops can connect to the network/internet by regular or wireless connection.
  • AT Service registered students & their note-takers have exclusive use of these facilities (with the exception of The Irish Wheelchair Association, who use the AT Centre to give young wheelchair users access to computers).
