Civil engineering is the oldest branch of engineering and deals with the design, construction and maintenance of the physical and naturally built environment, including works such as bridges, roads, canals, dams and buildings.
This three-year degree will develop your theoretical and practical knowledge of civil engineering. It will give you a thorough knowledge of the materials involved, and the standards required, in attaining structures of high quality in terms of design specification and construction.
Minimum Entry Requirements
Leaving CertificateGrade D3 at ordinary level in five subjects in the Leaving Certificate examination. Two of these subjects must be Mathematics and a language (English or Irish).
FETAC
Any FETAC level 5 qualification is acceptable. Applicants to this programme are required, however, to have the module Mathematics for Engineering (C20174) or Mathematics (C20139) or Mathematics for Computing (C20175) included in their award or alternatively have Leaving Certificate Mathematics.
Modules
Year 1Mathematics, Construction Technology & CAD, Engineering Science & Materials, Engineering Survey, Structural Mechanics, Communications and Computer Applications.
Year 2 – Semester 1

Progression
As a graduate of this programme you are eligible to apply to join the Bachelor Of Engineering (Honours) in Civil Engineering, provided you have an overall Merit 2 (50-59%) or higher and achieve at least 70% in the mathematics module or a pass in bridging Mathematics (offered to students by AIT). Alternatively, you may wish to apply for admission to Year 2 of a three-year degree programme or to Year 3 of a four-year honours degree (Level 8) course in civil engineering at other third-level institutions.
Professional Recognition
Career Opportunities
Employment opportunities occur both in the public and private sector e.g. with civil engineering contractors, civil/structural engineering consultants, national and local government agencies in areas including water supply, road/bridge design and maintenance, building regulations compliance and assessment of engineering material by laboratory analysis.
