Important Notice for Apprentices: Withdrawal of Version 1 Modular Assessments

AIT provides block release (Level 6)* courses for the following trades:

  • Motor Mechanic
  • Heavy Vehicle Mechanic
  • Plumber

*   While these National Craft Certificates have been placed as a set at Level 6, there are Level 7 outcomes associated with awards in the set. This placement does not preclude the possibility of existing National Craft Certificate programmes being validated at Level 7.

These courses are offered in association with FÁS, the training and employment authority, and are accredited by the Further Education and Training Awards Council (FETAC).

FÁS has legal responsibility for the organisation and control of apprentice training and education in the designated occupations, including registering of apprentices and monitoring and recording their progress through all phases of the apprenticeship. At present AIT participates in the Standards-Based Apprenticeship Scheme.

To facilitate apprentices to achieve these standards, the new scheme provides alternating phases of on-the-job and off-the-job training and education, in conjunction with FÁS Training Centres and institutes of technology.

Course Structure

Phases 1, 3, 5 and 7 are on-the-job phases

Phases 2, 4 and 6 are off-the-job phases.

Phase 2 (junior stage), duration 20 weeks, is spent at a FÁS Training Centre

Phases 4 and 6 (senior stages), duration 10 or 11 weeks each, are spent at an institute of technology.

Structured ongoing assessment gives more comprehensive and valid evidence of attainment during apprenticeship.

Accreditation

On successful completion of the Standards-Based Apprenticeship, the apprentice will receive a National Craft Certificate. This nationally and internationally recognised certificate is a compulsory requirement for craftsperson status.

Modules

The curricula, based on uniform, pre-specified and industry-agreed standards, are written by subject matter experts nominated by employers, trades unions, FÁS and the Department of Education and Science, to ensure that apprenticeship meets the current and future needs of Irish industry.
