The provision of childcare in Ireland has undergone significant change in recent times. Although the provision of childcare by relatives and childminders to pre-school and school-age children continues to be an important resource for many parents, there has been an increased demand for formal childcare provided by crèches, childcare centres, playgroups and preschool facilities. Furthermore, the fact that the number of children in the 0-6 age group has been rising steadily in recent years, from 57,782 births in 2001 to an unprecedented high of 74,278 births in 2009 means that non-parental childcare will continue to be a serious issue for families in Ireland.

This honours degree is distinguished by virtue of it being a childcare management course, uniquely combining disciplines, such as early childhood learning and business. It will educate and train you to be a reflective childcare manager and supervisor, skilled in the management of early childhood care and education settings, but importantly, responsive to the needs of an evolving childcare sector in the fluid social environment in which we live.

On completion of this programme, you will be able to apply advanced early childhood care and education knowledge and skills to be a reflective and innovative practitioner. On the course, you will learn how to critically appraise policies, procedures and principles in the early childcare and education field. You will learn how to manage a childcare setting, taking responsibility for decision-making in that setting, as well as independently and ethically conduct primary and secondary research in early childcare, education and management.
