Behaviours that Challenge

The aim of this module is to:

• provide students with an in-depth insight and awareness of what constitutes challenging behaviour in different social care settings and the various factors that contribute to it;
• to enable students in assessing the continuum of challenging behaviour and the risks of it occurring; and
• to critique in context, the interventions (as a practitioner or an organisation) to both prevent or manage challenging behaviour.

On successful completion of this module you will be able to:

• express a systematic understanding of the different perspectives and ways of conceptualising challenging behaviour across different social care settings;
• demonstrate awareness of the factors which can trigger episodes of challenging behaviour including: individual, group and family, wider organisational and cultural influences;
• assess the impact of challenging behaviour on staff and service users, and the degrees of tolerance by individuals and groups when responding to it;
• critically evaluate assessment frameworks and tools for determining the risk of and vulnerability to episodes of challenging behaviour within different care environments;
• critically examine contemporary national and international theoretical models and approaches for intervening when challenging behaviour arises;
• demonstrate awareness of organisational policies, procedures and mechanisms that managers and staff can develop to prevent challenging behaviour occurring or minimise the effects of it; and
• apply the learning from the module to the development of a policy for managing challenging behaviour within his/her own work environment

The module will feature a variety of teaching and learning techniques, including: lectures, tutorials, group work, presentations, guest speakers, case studies, role play, multimedia, Moodle, interactive class activities, question and answer sessions and self-directed learning.

Minimum Entry Requirements

Applicants should hold an honours degree (Level 8) in applied social studies or cognate discipline.

Progression

Learners who are awarded module-level awards are eligible to progress towards a Master of Arts or Postgraduate Diploma in Advanced Social Care Practice.
