The objective of this module is to provide you with an understanding of Irish mental health policy and its impact on social care service provision. It will equip you with an analytical appreciation and understanding of the social and cultural contexts within which mental health services are conceived, shaped and delivered. It will also enable you to critique psychotherapeutic interventions in a social care context and provide you with knowledge of the law pertaining to the care of service users with mental health problems.
On successful completion of this module, you will be able to:
- Assess the effects of the implementation/non-implementation of mental health policies for social care practice.
- Illustrate a systematic understanding of what a sociological perspective brings to our understanding of mental health and illness.
- Critically examine how our conception and attitudes to mental illness and the mentally ill are shaped by history, institutions and culture.
- Formulate client problems and select appropriate interventions using principles from recognised psychotherapeutic interventions.
- Critically evaluate the efficacy of biopsychosocial interventions in mental health.
- Critically appraise Irish law governing mental health care in Ireland with respect to international best practice.
The course will be delivered through a combination of lectures, tutorials, group work, guest speakers, role play, media (DVD), Moodle, interactive class activities, question and answer and self-directed learning.
