To provide students with an in-depth awareness of the various personal, group and organisational factors which contribute to conflict between individuals working in different social care settings.
To develop personal skills and tools for intervening as a practitioner to prevent conflict arising and to resolve that might arise between: individual staff; front line staff and managers; staff and service users; and staff and other stakeholders (service user’s family, other agencies)
To develop awareness of approaches and strategies which management and organisations can use to prevent conflict arising and to support individuals involved in interpersonal conflict scenarios.
On successful completion of this module you will be able to:
- Express a systematic understanding of the different types of conflict and the contributing factors.
- Demonstrate awareness of how differences in personal characteristics, styles, attitudes, personality etc. can contribute to the emergence and maintenance of interpersonal conflict.
- Demonstrate awareness of how dynamics within groups and aspects of an organisation’s culture (organisation, structure, systems, policies) can create the conditions for the emergence of conflict between individuals and rivalry within and between groups, departments etc.
- Highlight personal skills and tools for minimising or handle interpersonal conflict.
- Demonstrate awareness of organisational responses which managers and staff can develop to support staff by either preventing interpersonal conflict occurring or minimising its effects.
- Apply the learning and reflections from participation in this module to the management of interpersonal conflict within student’s own work environment.
The course will be delivered through a combination of lectures, tutorials, group work, guest speakers, role play, media (DVD), Moodle, interactive class activities, question and answer and self-directed learning.
Minimum Entry Requirements
Applicants should hold an honours degree (Level 8) in applied social studies or a cognate discipline.
