International students

Introduction

Society today has seen rapid changes in terms of lifestyles, technological developments, globalisation of markets, and the increasing interdependability of nations. Our courses and curricula reflect such changes. AIT is actively involved in EU schemes which provide you with work and study opportunities abroad. Participation has been predominantly within the areas of student and staff mobility, in addition to some research and consultancy work carried out as part of pan-European consortia.

The EU education schemes have been developed to strengthen the spirit of European citizenship and to draw upon the cultural heritage of each EU state. Student exchange programmes achieve this aim by facilitating the mobility of students within the EU. Exchange programmes operate in the schools of Business, Humanities, Science and Engineering, with EU students attending courses at the institute and our students studying abroad on a reciprocal basis. Staff exchanges between partner institutes are also an integral part of the particular schemes and the collaboration includes the development of networks whereby institutes with a common interest join together in the development of projects, teaching materials, etc. As an active member of the Business School Network (BUSINET) and of the European Association for International Education (EAIE), the Business School has been at the forefront of such activity.

Students from the School of Engineering have availed of EU funding to enable them to carry out industrial training programmes abroad. The School of Humanities has developed mobility exchange programmes with institutes and universities in Canada and the USA in the fields of social care and child and youth care.

Links have been established by the School of Science with institutions such as Staffordshire University, University of London Royal Postgraduate Medical School and the University of Portsmouth. Student and staff exchanges have been set-up between AIT and the Institut Universitaire de Technologie (IUT), Rennes. Students from year three programmes in the School of Science can apply to study or complete placement for one semester at AIT partner colleges in the US at Daemen College, Buffalo; New College, Florida or Pitzer College, California.

The institute has established franchise arrangements with the Zambia Centre for Accountancy Studies (ZCAS), Lusaka, Zambia, which allows ZCAS students to follow AIT courses in Zambia and, simultaneously with AIT students, take AIT assessments and examinations. ZCAS students are eligible to transfer to the institute to complete the final stages of their professional accountancy examinations. AIT and Dongbei University of Finance and Economics (DUFE), China, have a partnership agreement whereby students can transfer to the Bachelor of Arts in Accounting at AIT.

The institute is currently developing student transfer links with a number of educational institutions in China, which allow Chinese students to complete the final two years of their programme of study in Athlone. One such agreement enables students from Southern Yangtze University, Wuxi, China transfer to computer and software engineering programmes at AIT.

In January 2009, AIT signed an agreement to explore collaborative research and educational opportunities with leading US university Georgia Tech and their Irish operation, Georgia Tech Ireland (GTI). The memorandum of understanding envisages the possibility of joint research programmes, joint/dual undergraduate and postgraduate programmes, as well as collaboration on the ongoing development of a Midlands Gateway Research and Innovation Centre. Possible areas of collaboration for joint/dual programmes include bioscience, nanomedicine, systems engineering and entrepreneurship.
