Student experiences of PASS

Research at Bournemouth University shows that using a Peer Assisted approach helps students:

1. Integrate more quickly into college life

"It has given me a greater in sight into college life from students that are a similar age to me and also the ways things are done at college I am glad to have attended these sessions."

"It helped with getting used to college life and eased me into life away from my family. Also it has allowed me to make new friends."

2. Gain a clearer understanding of course direction and expectations

"It has helped me to know what to expect in my first year as it is all very new at the beginning. We were given tips on how to use the resources available and what is expected from us."

"I have a better understanding of the work and effort that is expected while on the course and the way in which work is marked/should be presented."

"Getting guidance on the course from the perspective of someone who has just done it is a great supplement to the support the lecturers provide."

3. Develop their learning and study skills

"At the beginning it helped me to structure my work and made myself and my classmates sort out and make big decisions in this time on group assignments we had."

"It has really helped with showing me things that I might not have had to do in previous school years, e.g. referencing, reports formats and academic writing."

4. Deepen their understanding of the subject matter of their course through group discussions

"It helps with topics that are confusing. Other students could explain things in a way that I would understand."

"It helped me to understand the more challenging units in the course - for example, 'Introduction to Accounting' and 'Legal Relationships'. It has also helped with my decision for the choices and options next year."

5. Better prepare for assessed course work and examinations

"It helped with understanding formats and content of assignments. Gives a chance to talk about things you haven't understood in lectures and seminars. A chance to reflect on work we’ve done and talk about up and coming assignments."

"It gave me reassurance that, when I was planning my essays, I was thinking along the same lines as everyone else and hadn’t gone off on a tangent."
