Recognition of Prior Learning
Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) is defined as recognising learning that has already taken place prior to enrolment on the particular programme of study. Learning is defined as the acquisition of knowledge and skills that has resulted from a successful learning process. This learning process may have taken place formally through a further or higher education provider or informally or non-formally through work/life experiences.
Who is RPL aimed at?RPL is intended for mature learners who may or may not have had structured formal education but who have learned from their involvement in employment, community activities, home duties, sports etc. This learning is assessed by the relevant assessor (s) and this assessment may lead to academic credits, exemptions from subjects on intended course of study or places on particular courses of study.
What constitutes prior learning?
1. Accredited Learning
Learning that you have undertaken that has been accredited by a further/higher educational institution.
2. Non- Accredited/ Non-formal Learning
Work-based training and/or education courses, that may have been assessed, but not formally accredited.
3. Informal
Informal/ experiential learning (relevant life or work/voluntary experiences)
What can I use RPL for?
Athlone Institute of Technology have put in place a policy and procedures that allow for the recognition of Prior Learning as a means to;
1. Achieving entry (or advanced entry) to a programme of study,
2. Granting of exemption from a module or modules within a programme of study
Therefore if you can prove that you are already have studied part of your course and/or have relevant experience and learning in that field, you may be entitled to course exemptions.
Portfolios of Evidence:
In making an application for RPL, applicants may be required to compile a portfolio of evidence demonstrating how they have achieved the learning outcomes of a particular module within a programme or how they meet the entry requirements of a programme of study. An RPL Mentor will provide you with support, guidelines and assistance in making your application for RPL and/or in compiling your portfolio. This is normally followed by an interview where the portfolio is discussed.
Stages in Process:Applicant submits initial Application Form Applicant completes detailed Application Form Institute decision to progress application based on evidence outlined in application form Institute contacts Applicant and outlines how to complete relevant portfolio Applicant completes portfolio Applicant undergoes interview Applicant receives appropriate exemptions, awards or entry on desired course
